|---|---|---|
| delay(遅らせる) | postpone(延期する) | 予定を後ろにずらす意味に限定される |
| show(見せる) | illustrate(具体例で説明する) | 図や例を使って説明するニュアンス |
| cry(泣く) | weep(涙を流して泣く) | 声より涙に焦点があり、やや書き言葉的 |
| usual(いつもの) | typical(典型的な) | 「その種類によくある」という意味を含む |
| habit(習慣) | tendency(傾向) | 性質としての「〜しがち」を表す |
| stop(やめさせる) | prohibit(禁止する) | 法律や規則による禁止に使う |

<例題1>
After the storm, the local ( ) worked together to clean the streets.
1 spectators 2 residents 3 philosophers 4 passengers
正解は2のresidents(住民)です。
<例題2>
We ( ) her on winning the speech contest.
1 celebrated 2 congratulated 3 satisfied 4 inspired
正解は2のcongratulated(祝った)です。
<例文1>
The village is so isolated that it takes three hours to get there by car, and there is no bus service.
<例文2>
Although the hotel looked luxurious, the rooms were surprisingly cheap.
Although(〜だけれども)は、前後で反対の内容をつなぐ語です。
however・on the other hand・in contrastなどの逆接、because・as a resultなどの因果を表す語にも注目しましょう。
